Park Ave. business community fears worst
By P.A. Sévigny
The Suburban
Following the city's recent announcement about its
intention to replace the major water aqueduct running
under one of its busiest streets, more than 100 people,
including many of Park Avenue's leading businesspeople,
attended what was described as "an information session"
held in the Mile End Library's second floor conference
room.
"I don't believe this is an 'information session," said
Jimmy Zoubris, a local businessman who is sometimes
described as "the Mayor of Park Avenue." "As far as I'm
concerned, I think it sounds more like a done deal."
While veteran city councilor Richard Deschamps, the
city executive committee member in charge of civic infrastructure,
continued to insist nothing had "as yet" been
decided, his tone and the rest of the evening's discussion
left little to the imagination as the tight-knit Park Avenue
business community began to wonder how the city's
immediate plans for their ...

The Up Clubhouse organization opens
its doors to the public
By Abby E. Schachter
The Suburban
It's nearly impossible to feel at home
when you're being treated as a patient
and not a person. Unfortunately the
majority of medical centres are known
for having a cold and unwelcoming
atmosphere.
This is why The Up Clubhouse (a centre
for people suffering from mental illness)
is so revolutionary. It does not stigmatize
its members. Instead, participants
feel comfortable and valuable. "We
respect the disability," said staff member
Leib Reuven Feldman earnestly. "This is
not a closed off environment, we provide
honest help and support for the patient,"
he added.
After much anticipation the Up
Clubhouse has finally made its way to
Montreal. "This is the first one in
Quebec," said Feldman. There are more
than 300 Up Clubhouses located around
the world. "They have them in France,
South Africa, even Uganda," he added.
The centre was originally called
Fountain House and was founded ...

Berku hints at
change at
St. Luc rail
yard
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
Change may be afoot at the St. Luc
Canadian Pacific railyards in Côte St. Luc,
Councillor Dida Berku hinted at a meeting
for her district constituents last Thursday.
The issue came up when a resident questioned
the wisdom of Côte St. Luc spending
about $6 million of the total $17.3 million
for its planned intergenerational aquatic
centre. Berku pointed out that two-thirds
of the funding is coming from the federal
and provincial governments.
The councillor then said that "even the
CP lands which we are so concerned about
because of all of the noise, pollution, vibrations
and inconvenience they cause us,
there may be some movement there over
the next little while which will free up some
land and give us more tax revenue from the
CP lands and open up Côte St. Luc. We
have to look to the future, that's all I can
say about that. The [intergenerational

Fixing infrastructure is
'real business of
Hampstead': Edery
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
Hampstead's planned extensive infrastructure
work "is the real business" of
the town, as opposed to the rivalries that
have punctuated every council meeting
since last year's election, exasperated
councillor Jack Edery said at last week's
council meeting.
Edery spoke in light of a recent
$814,000 PRECO pipe renewal grant
from the federal and provincial governments
to fix the town's underground
pipes. Hampstead has to provide matching
funds of about $500,000, and a loan
by-law was passed to cover the amount.
Edery added that a $1.8 million federal
excise tax grant for work from 2010 to
2013 also requires the town to provide
matching funds of about $800,000.
"The $500,000 we put in now for the
PRECO grant will also count toward the
$800,000 for the federal excise tax grant."
But Edery reacted to last week's meeting
being dominated by battles on council
and in the audience by suppo ...
