Côte St. Luc may ease up on
its longtime restrictions on left
turns off westbound Fleet Road,
The Suburban has learned.
This and other traffic issues
are on the agenda of Councillor
Dida Berku's upcoming District
3 council meeting, being held 7
p.m. July 8 at Tifereth Beth
David Jerusalem Synagogue on
Baily Road.
Berku told The Suburban
Thursday that Côte St. Luc
council is considering lessening
the restrictions on left turns
even further than is currently
the case.
"We're floating the idea with
the residents," the councillor
said.

MEDIA FACILITIES AT CSL CITY
HALL
Côte St. Luc recently set up a press table at
city hall for the monthly council meetings,
complete with facilities for media to connect
their tape recorders to a mechanism to enable
clear sound. For at least 20 years, The
Suburban has taken residence at a desk that
also contains the meeting agenda, but the
recorded sound from that position was frequently
unclear because of the position of
speakers in the room. Now, thanks to the city
and communications director Darryl Levine,
that problem has been resolved. Hampstead

Traffic turning people off MUHC
By Abby E. Schachter
The Suburban
MUHC - The McGill University Health Centre is
meant to improve lives, reads a sign overlooking one
of the hospital's construction sites.
However, the irony of such a statement was made
clear after local Westmount and NDG residents
voiced their disapproval about the current access
problems. Anna Rioux, a NDG resident, travels regularly
to Westmount to care for her elderly mother.
Rioux says that the road closures and construction
has added stress to her life. "I'm pretty annoyed. I
have to switch routes and improvise. When I'm running
late, I get slowed down by construction. It's
really inconvenient."
Rioux added that closing off roads is not the main
problem, "It would be fine if it was properly planned,
I mean how much longer do you think this will
last?"
Glen Road was agreed to be used as an emergency
access point only back in 2007. No one expected
such disorder. A mass relocation of bus routes and

meetings. Goldwax and Gonshor opposed the
motion to ban Gonshor.
"I don't believe the intentions [to resolve
the issue] are there," Goldwax said. "I'm
shocked."
"I thought we were all going to sit down
and talk about it!" said Gonshor.
Monday's council meeting, where this
issue dominated, was very fractious. Former
councillor Lillian Vineberg, her husband
Stephen Vineberg and council regular Rachel
Genziuk were escorted out of the meeting by
public security on orders from Mayor William
Steinberg for speaking or protesting out of
turn from their seats. Catcalls could be heard
during the meeting and, at one point, one resident
told another to "shut the f--k up."
As seen in opinion articles signed by
Steinberg and most of council in last week's
Suburban and a letter by Gonshor to residents
and included in this week's Suburban,
Gonshor and most of the rest of council are
at odds over part of the Code of Et ...

Westmount's pro-active graffiti fight
By P.A. Sévigny
The Suburban
Even if Westmount's $70,000 cannot
match the $700,000 the
CDN/NDG borough is spending to
fight the city's taggers, Westmount
city managers are confident they can
hold their own against the city's ubiquitous
taggers and their insidious
graffiti.
"If we're going to deal with this
problem," said Westmount Public
Security Director Richard Bourdon,
"the city will have to develop a proactive
partnership with its own population."
In a word, Bourdon believes presence
makes a difference. As long as
city residents remain vigilant and
report damage done to their property
as soon as it occurs, authorities
believe the taggers will soon begin to
look elsewhere for what a few describe
as an urban art form and what everybody
else describes as a pathetic and
self indulgent waste of time and
money. When asked why Westmount
seemed to be less affected by the problem
when compared to its neighbors,
Bourdon said people made a ...

CDN/NDG was well prepared
for moving chaos
By P.A. Sévigny
The Suburban
As usual, July's holiday weekend is often
reduced to a logistical nightmare as
Montreal's moving day madness takes over
the city's normally quiet residential streets.
While some tenants are moving out of their
old apartments, others are moving in and a
lot of snap decisions are made about mattresses
and dressers. Within hours after the
trucks are gone, everybody's knocking back
a beer while waiting for some pizza, but the
streets are still piled high with tons of
decrepit and broken furniture which
means the borough has to pick up the
mess.
While some of the city's boroughs admit
they were overwhelmed by the tsunami of
moving day detritus, experience has taught
CDN/NDG borough managers how their
failure to plan almost always guarantees
their plan to fail.
"We paid a lot of people overtime," said
borough spokesman Francois Puchin.
"Over the moving day period, we had four
extra trucks on the road pick ...

Henri-Bradet Centre receives
Quebec funding for renovations
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
The Henri-Bradet Residential Centre
will be undergoing $1.487 million in
renovations thanks to funding from the
Quebec government, D'Arcy McGee
MNA Lawrence Bergman announced
last week.
Bergman made the announcement on
behalf of Lise Thériault, Quebec's min-
ister for social services.
The centre is part of the Cavendish
Health and Social Services Center
(CSSS). According to the CSSS website,
the NDG-based centre is "a community
day program that provides preventative
and therapeutic activities for seniors
living at home who have lost some
autonomy whether physical, cognitive
or psychosocial."
"For residents, the Henri-Bradet Care
Centre is their living environment,"
Bergman said in a prepared statement.
"The investments we are announcing
today will help improve their quality of
life, enhance the work environment of
staff members, and make ...
