Montreal West is getting closer to a permanent
solution to block cars from accessing
Montreal West from Des Érables in Lachine,
through the area known as Devil's Hill, Mayor
Beny Masella announced at last week's town
council meeting.
"We've issued the contract to the engineer to
come up with sidewalks [as a blockage], and the
engineer's plans should come back to us within
two or three weeks. It should be in the contractor's
hands before the end of June - in other
words, we [expect to] issue the contract to the
contractor ...

CAREER TRANSITIONS LECTURE AT
CSL LIBRARY
Dr. Ada Sinacore, a leading authority on career
issues, will give a lecture on career transitions on
Thursday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. at Côte St. Luc's
Eleanor London Library, the city announced.
"Career transition refers to the process of
changing one's professional life due to changes in
the demand for certain kinds of jobs or for other
reasons," says the city announcement. "With
change also comes a chance for individuals to
pave a new career path and transform a personal
passion or hobby into a viable career option. For
some this may translate into a return to school in
a particular area of interest. In this lecture, Dr.
Sinacore, an associate professor at the McGill
University Department of Educational and
Counselling Psychology, will examine the challenges
and opportunities that arise in the process
of occupational transitioning." Tickets are $3. For

CDN/NDG honours
outstanding citizens
By Abby E. Schachter
The Suburban
The CDN and NDG Outstanding
Citizens awards were held at
Montreal's Mount Royal Chalet last
Thursday. Mayor Michael Applebaum
said Beaver Lake was chosen as the
party location because it represents
the beauty of Montreal, "we thought
what better place to hold the awards
ceremony, than this beautiful and
historic place." Applebaum, along
with fellow NDG/CDN councilors
greeted guests as they made their way
into the party. "It's about bringing
people together. It's about saying
thank-you, it's a gathering of friends,"
said Applebaum as he shook hands
with the nominees.
The affair included a red carpet
leading up the front steps of the
chalet, cocktails, a violinist and an
assortment of food. Francois Puchin;
the Communications officer for both
the CDN and NDG boroughs,
explained that the first time event
will most likely happen again. "We
decided to regroup everything into
one big event, instead of ha ...

Will Bono buy a condo at Blue Bonnets?
Toronto - I have been trying to get a
few minutes with Montreal City
Councillor Marvin Rotrand for some
time now to discuss the U2 concert
planned for the Hippodrome Blue Bonnets
complex. Interestingly, it took a trip to
Toronto for that meeting to occur.
While attending the recent Federation of
Canadian Municipalities Conference
(FCM) in the Ontario capital, I was heading
up the escalator at the Sheraton Centre
when I spotted Rotrand going the opposite
way. He was engaged in discussion with
Maria Tutino, the mayor of Baie d'Urfé,
who had some transit issues on her mind.
With the U2 concert postponed due to
lead singer Bono's back surgery, Rotrand
concurred with officials from Evenko in
last week's column that the Blue Bonnets
facility should indeed be available in the
summer of 2011. "We expect a housing
development there," he said, "but it would
be really optimistic to think that would
happen by next year. So much must be
done in the interim."

St. Laurent honours
Alouettes star and wife
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
St. Laurent presented its 2010 Ordre des
Grands Laurentiens awards last week at a
city hall ceremony to residents and
employees who have contributed to the
community in a special way.
The awards were presented in several
categories. In the family category, the
recipients were Alouettes star Anthony
Calvillo and his wife Alexia, residents of St.
Laurent since 2003. They were recognized
for their efforts following Alexia's bout with
cancer after the birth of their second child
in 2007, and her subsequent recovery. They
acknowledged the work of the Royal
Victoria Hospital by improving the Family
Room on the Hematology-Oncology inpatient
ward. Their efforts, in collaboration
with others, resulted in the renovation of
the Family Room, which was inaugurated
in their name in April 2009.
"Their courage and generosity are an
example for us all," said councillor Laval
Demers.
"I think it's amazing - when ...

The other winners were:

According to the borough, "under
Persechino's guidance, the club has grown

renowned, and many of its members have
distinguished themselves at all competitive
levels, including the Olympics. Over the
years, she has demonstrated how much she
takes to heart the personal growth through

actions focus on a single goal - developing
a safe, high-quality sports environment
