Olympic experience had been like
while dealing with the sudden death
of her mother Thérèse in Vancouver
at the age of 55 from a massive heart

?I?m extremely proud of the
incredible battle I won in
Vancouver,? Rochette said. ?I left
having in mind I was going to war to
win a battle but the battle was obviously
tougher than expected. Yes I
lost someone very important in my
life but she lives through me and
what I want in the future is for her
legacy to go on. I know she would
want me to smile and enjoy my
Olympic moment. It took me a long
time to try to separate the athlete
from the person but I know that 10

knowing I did everything I could and
not be thinking I should have.?
Rochette became the first Quebec

From local leagues to the world stage
By Mark Lidbetter
The Suburban
It was fitting that the Greater Montreal Athletic
Association held its? winter championships in hockey
and basketball during the final days of the
Vancouver Olympics.
While athletes from around the world were striving
to go higher, faster and stronger, local high
school athletes were attempting to do the same ?
all for the love of the game. Competitive fires burn
bright in every participant, regardless of the level of
play but more important is the sportsmanship, honour
and life lessons learned in victory and defeat.
It is from the grassroots levels of sports that
future Olympians emerge, especially in the surge of
interest spawned in an Olympic year. The commitment
of the student athletes mirrors that of athletes
in the numerous team sports and individual disciplines
that make-up our vibrant amateur athletic
scene.
Silver medalist Jennifer Heil commented that it
amazed her that a Quebec based ski club that would

MoWest forced to change
street fix plans
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
An unhappy Montreal West has been forced to
change the order of the streets it wants to fix as part
of its long-term infrastructure program, because the
Programme d?Infrastructure de Québec (PIQ) program
which provides funding has different priorities.
?If we knew we had to do a block, and we know two
years from now we had to do the next or a contiguous
block, we were trying to group them together so
we would only inconvenience residents one time,?
Mayor Beny Masella told The Suburban. ?The government
says no ? if in the original priority, the
next street doesn?t come up
until two years later, they don?t
want to know that it?s more
convenient to do it now. They
say, ?you have to do the one
that?s the worst, and then the
next worse.?
?They?re looking at [it on the
basis] of sewers, not at the
road or potholes.?
