Rental board ?stole my home!?
NDG resident says clerical mistake left him homeless
By Dan Delmar
The Suburban
An NDG man who had been
struggling to keep his dilapidated
yet affordable Fielding Ave. apartment
for the past three years has
been dealt one final blow by the
Régie du Logement du Québec,
which he says has unjustly forced
him out onto the street.
John Ranger first spoke with The
Suburban in 2008 after he had been
living in a roach and rodent-infested
3 1/2 at 6665 Fielding for nearly
one year ? without a kitchen sink.
Landlord Youcef Berkane claimed
he was a problem tenant and made
unsuccessful attempts to evict him.
Ranger was finally forced out last
month because he said the rental
board sent a crucial notice to the
wrong address.
?I came home on a Saturday
night with my girlfriend and there
was a new lock on the door,? Ranger
said, describing the night his apartment
was emptied out by bailiffs. ?I
knocked on my door? I heard and
felt the hollowness. I was ...

Jennifer Heil?s Olympic smile
Mike Cohen
Have you noticed how white
Canadian freestyle mogul skiing
star Jennifer Heil?s teeth are in all
of those television interviews she?s doing
about her silver medal winning performance
last Saturday? The Montreal resident
and McGill University Desautels
Faculty of Management student made a
trip to the dentist prior to her departure
for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. The
father and son team of Drs. Warren and
Jason Retter have posted her most recent
appointment on their website (www.retterdentalcare.com)
via YouTube. Warren,
in fact, went one step further. He was at
Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver to
watch her perform over the weekend
with a promise to polish her teeth before
her smile on the podium.
What will Heil do when she retires?
She recently did some work for the Birk?s
Montreal design team downtown,
immersing herself in a five-month project.
?I live right around the corner,? she
told Macleans Magazine. ?I would arrive
smiling and leave s ...

Westmount residents victims
of ?get out of jail? scam
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
A country-wide scam enticing seniors
to wire money on the pretext of bailing
out a relative from jail has hit home for
Westmount resident John Mason and his
family, who said they conned out of nearly
$8,000.
The scam has also been reported as far
away as Vancouver, where in one case, a
Safeway clerk dissuaded a senior from
wiring $4,600 to get her ?grandson? out
of ?jail.? The RCMP has dubbed this ?the
grandson scam.?
Mason decided to make his case known
to the public, after reading last week?s
Suburban story in which Station 9 commander
Sylvain Bissonnette warned of
the scam, which appears to originate
from Toronto but is likely operated out of
Montreal. The resident believes other
seniors in his apartment building at 4300
De Maisonneuve West could also be targeted.
Mason said that nearly two weeks ago,
his wife received a call from someone
purporting to be a grandson, calling from

Speed factor in fatal CSL crash
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
Speed was at least one cause of a fatal
and fiery crash in which a driver lost control
heading northbound on Côte St.
Luc?s Cavendish Boulevard and crashed a
BMW into the street?s underpass at 1:30
a.m. Tuesday morning, says Station 9
commander Sylvain Bissonnette.
?It was going at more than 100 km/hr,?
the commander said. Cavendish has a 50
km/hr speed limit and the road curves
near the underpass.
?The car hit the wall and the person
was so badly burned that we were not
able to recognize the driver. The body
was transported to the morgue, and an
autopsy will tell us who it was exactly. We
can not say now if the victim was a man
or a woman. It was that bad. We also
couldn?t see the driver?s license.?
Bissonnette said that the actual owner
of the car was informed of the accident,
but said more details about the circumstances
would be known in the course of
an investigation, which will include a
