TAX HIKE
Cont?d from page 1
Prior to her request, Danyluk?s
letter pulls no punches as she
describes decades of bad decisions
inspired by short-sighted partisan
politics which have all contributed
to the city?s evident and inevitable
decline. Apart from the city?s recent
decision to impose a 12.3 percent
increase upon its ?Agglo? partners
? a tax hike which exceeds both
the consumer price index as well as
the normal inflation rate, Danyluk?s
letter specifically condemns former
Quebec minister Claude Ryan?s
1992 decision to withdraw all funding
from the city?s public transport
system which effectively forced the
city?s taxpayers to cover the bill.
Decades later, both the city and its
transport system are still dealing
with what has now become a perpetual
working deficit ? a situation
from which the city has never
fully recovered. Danyluk?s letter
also describes an entire decade?s
worth of bad law inspired by partisan
politics along with a long list of
half-hearted meas ...

?Point and match to Marvin!?
Rotrand relentless with new opposition councillor McQueen
By Dan Delmar
The Suburban
Newly elected in NDG, Peter McQueen is
already getting chastised, procedurally
speaking, by some of his colleagues on the
Côte des Neiges-NDG council.
During recent borough council meetings,
Snowdon councillor Marvin Rotrand has
been doing his best to enforce strict guidelines
and disciplining McQueen for even the
slightest misstep. At January?s meeting, the
criticisms became so relentless that many
citizens in attendance, and McQueen himself,
began chuckling during the exchanges.
Côte des Neiges-NDG Mayor Michael
Applebaum, who also chairs the council
meetings, told McQueen he was ?out of
order? when the councillor asked for news
on future funding for the Empress Cultural
Centre project during a motion regarding
another NDG cultural project; the new
Benny Library.
?You?re not just stretching the rules,?
Rotrand said in response to the query,
?you?re making them elastic.?

HaitItalia
By Joel Ceausu
The Suburban
Res non verba - Action, not words. It?s
the motto of the borough of St. Léonard,
home to the Leonardo da Vinci Centre
and much of Montreal?s Italian community,
and it?s in that spirit that the Centre
and the National Congress of Italian
Canadians-Quebec Division (Congresso)
are teaming up with a roster of talented
artists to put on a show to raise funds for
Haiti relief.
On Feb. 17, HaitItalia will feature local
Haitian, Italian and Québécois singers
and performers, all volunteering their
time and talents to send much-needed
dollars to the Canadian Red Cross. While
benefiting a torn and battered nation,
HaitiItalia will bring together two vibrant
and neighbouring Montreal communities
for a night of music, smiles and good will.
It?s a powerhouse list of performers:
Marie-Josée Lord, Vincenzo Thoma, Eddy
King, Natalie Choquette, Daniel Panetta,
Sylvie Desgroseilliers, Ima, Marco
Valeriani, Pierre-Michel Ménard,
?Soupçon? from Cirque ...

DeSousa to activist: Change brand of protest
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
St. Laurent mayor Alan DeSousa
chastised longtime activist Murray
Levine for a one-man protest the latter
held months ago, relating to the
annual Tour de L?Île bicycling event.
Levine, who has been lobbying for
decades to have the Tour be an event
for charity, is known among local
politicians for his hold-prettymuch-nothing-back
s tyle. He had a
longtime beef with Côte St. Luc several
years ago over the removal of
pink ribbons regarding breast cancer
near the CP tracks, and for the
removal of political signs during an
election campaign.
But when Levine appeared at last
week?s St. Laurent borough meeting,
his issue had nothing to do with
the Tour. Instead, he pointed out
that NDG-Lachine MP Marlene
Jennings presented a motion pointing
out that provinces like Alberta
and New Brunswick exempt their
public healthcare sectors from the
federal goods and services tax (GST).
Her motion called on the gov ...

Another Day for Drabkin: Stockwell
Day, now the president of the Federal
Treasury Board, has moved over to his
new portfolio with local immigration
lawyer Neil Drabkin in the familiar role
as chief of staff. Drabkin, who has distinguished
himself in that capacity, held the
same post for Day in Public Safety and
Trade. Drabkin has supported Day as his
chief of staff since the election in 2006,
first at Public Safety, then at
International Trade and will now do so at
the ever important Treasury Board.
Drabkin will have his work cut out for
him. As one of his most trusted minis-
ters, Day has been given the huge mandate
by the prime minister to restrain
spending and cut the national debt.
