NEWS AND ANALYSIS Cannon lays out compassionate aid agenda By P.A.Sévigny The Suburban While Stephen Harper?s government was quick off the mark in response to the massive earthquake that leveled Port Au Prince, Haiti?s capital city, it wasn?t enough to allay the fears of a growing number of local citizens who have friends and relatives in Haiti. ?My brother is still down there (Port au Prince) and we have no news of him since the earthquake,? said Jean Annaelle Joseph. ?My mother is sick from worrying about him.? Last Thursday, Canada?s foreign affairs minister, Lawrence Cannon, met various representatives of the city?s Haitian community in La Perle Retrouvée, a local community centre located in a de-consecrated church near the Metropolitan. During a brief noontime press conference, Cannon, along with local federal MP Denis Coderre, provincial MNA Emmanuel Dubourg, Montreal Mayor Gérald Tremblay and Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, said the government was doing everything it could to pro ...

NEWS & ANALYSIS Concordia alumnus tells horror story, straight from Port au Prince University pledges help to Haitian students By Dan Delmar The Suburban Concordia University?s leaders met with Haitian student groups on Friday evening and all listened in horror as a Haitan professor described the hell on earth that is his homeland. ?I?m touched by the solidarity in this community,? said Concordia president Judith Woodsworth. ?You can be sure that we can offer some relief for you. NEWS & ANALYSIS Haitian entrepreneurs unwavering during crisis By Dan Delmar The Suburban Young Haitian business leaders like Kerlande Mibel still have family members missing in her native country, but the magnitude of the tragedy still hasn?t sunk in for some of those connected directly to the devastation. Mibel, president of the Jeune Chambre de Commerce Haitienne (JCCH), was frantically organizing a last-minute cocktail fundraiser Friday evening at their Viger St. headquarters. Even though she still does not know the whereabouts of some loved ones and is receiving morbid news about others via Facebook, the young entrepreneurship counsellor is focused, running on pure adrenaline. There is much to be done in the short term to relieve suffering, she says, but Haiti?s future also needs to be addressed in the coming weeks. ?We decided to help by raising some funds with the Red Cross. First, they need water, food and medicine,? said Mibel, who has been with the JCCH since 2002. ?Later, we ...
