situation hadn?t improved.
On Monday, The Suburban spotted
some work being carried out
and CDN/NDG Mayor Michael
Applebaum confirmed that to
media. A company called
Hazmasters was on site removing
asbestos from the walls of the lobby,
forcing tenants to enter their apartments
at 4837 through the garage.
One employee said it was ?disgusting?
to allow residents to walk
through the lobby knowing children
would be exposed to asbestos,
which can lead to serious respiratory
ailments if inhaled.
?Mr. Sebag is someone who is
well-known to the city officials.
He?s one of our worst landlords,?
said Applebaum, who is also the
executive committee member in
charge of housing. ?He is a delinquent
landlord? As people like to
say, a slumlord.?
Sebag?s buildings made the news
again in recent days after tenants
complained once more of poor living
conditions. Apartments at 4837
and 4855 Vezina are infested with
rodents and cockroaches, some
have been without he ...

St. Laurent bylaw to reduce parking spaces
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
St. Laurent council recently amended
its parking spaces bylaw, to enact what it
calls an environmentally and development-friendly
measure that will see parking
spaces of new industrial and residential
complex properties reduced.
?The implementation of the bylaw
should help bring about, in the long
term, a 20 percent reduction in the number
of parking spaces across the borough,?
says a St. Laurent announcement.
The amended bylaw will place a limit
on parking spaces depending on the category
of property, and thus ?reduces the
ratio of parking spaces as well as their
minimal surface area? and also lessen the
incidence of sewer backups and heat
islands, areas of St. Laurent that are hotter
in temperature than others. The goal
is a ?canopy cover? of 40 percent, in
terms of a shaded area provided by a
mature tree, a policy comparable to
Portland, Oregon.
?This is an ambitious, yet realistic target,?

H.O.P.E. means helping
out people everywhere!
From left to right Doreen Allebone, Janice Berry, Ted Pereira, Pat Clinton, Kelvin Berry.
By P.A. Sévigny
The Suburban
Deep in the basement of LaSalle?s
Jean de Brébeuf church, hundreds of
food items neatly stacked and sorted
among home-made wall-to-wall shelving
units have as much to say about the
spirit of Christmas as does every shopping
centre Santa Clause and the
spoon-man?s endless racket outside of
the Ogilvy?s Christmas window.
?We?re hoping to hand out at least 75
Christmas baskets for families who need
them,? said Project Hope manager
Kelvin ?Kal? Berry. ?We?re also going to
be handing out toys for the kids, at least
50 Gazette (Christmas Fund) checks
and local IGA food vouchers for the single
people who need them.?
Apart from the kind support from the
parish and its priest, Father John
Walsh, Kelvin and Janice Berry keep the
food bank open with nothing but the
help of a few dedicated volunteers and a
$5,700 donati ...

Goldstone report ?travesty of justice?:
UN Watch?s Hillel Neuer
By Joel Goldenberg
The Suburban
The Goldstone Report is a
?travesty of justice? and tainted
in terms of its origins, its findings
and those involved in its
conception, UN Watch director
Hillel Neuer told a dinner and
discussion last Thursday at Côte
St. Luc?s Tifereth Beth David
Jerusalem Synagogue, put on by
the Jewish National Fund of
Montreal.
Neuer told The Suburban
Monday pointed out many do not
realize that the October 2009
report, an investigation led by
former South African judge
Richard Goldstone into the 2009
Gaza conflict between Israel and
the terrorist group Hamas, was a
