By Kevin Woodhouse The Suburban Prime Minister Stephen Harper, seeking a clear mandate in the upcoming federal election, made a significant campaign stop this past Friday when he spoke to supporters and introduced the Conservative candidates for Montreal and region at the le Perrot Community Centre. When Harper makes a stop, it is larger than a regular convention. There were security checks and registration lines. Inside the community hall, jammed to capacity, were supporters, print and electronic media as well as the 22 Conservative candidates for Montreal and the region. And despite being an hour late, the supporters were not deterred at all. The 22 candidates stood on stage for 10 minutes before Stephen Harper was introduced. He shook hands as he made his way to the stage, standing in front of his Montreal team. The most frequent responses of Holocaust survivors when they are asked what is the most important lesson they learned from the war is almost always the same. When evil men tell you that they mean to do you harm ? believe them. If they are bluffing, it's a bonus. After the comments this week of Iran's ?Supreme Leader? Ayatollah Ali Khameni, they should think again. Iran's apologists have constantly repeated the theme that President Ahmadenijad's ravings aren't really the last word. That they are meant for domestic political consumption. By Dr. Roger Gibbins President and CEO and Dr. Kari Roberts Senior Policy Analyst Canada West Foundation Canadians might be surprised to learn that Canada does not have an energy strategy. Despite our vast endowment of energy resources ? from our offshore energy potential and the oil sands to hydro and uranium power ? we do not have a strategy in place to manage this wealth and to maximize the opportunities it presents for Canada. Partly to blame for this absence of an energy strategy is the recent blurring of the lines between energy and climate change. More often than not, discussions about Canada's energy future end up being hijacked by (albeit important) discussions about greenhouse gas emissions. The energy and climate change policy files are intimately connected, but it may be time to start thinking about them separately. Both the Government of Canada's Turning the Corner and the Liberal Party of Canada's Green Shift are responses to climate change. Their finer points aside, they ...

n BUSINESS n Nightmare on Wall Street Investing In You David Lisbona Last week had to have been the most stomach churning time in my investing experience and certainly since I have been writing in this esteemed publication. My favorite indicator, my Dad, was more resigned and numb than anything else which, I believe, is a state of being that lies just beyond panic. My only moment of prescience was that in light of the precipitous 3,000 point drop on the TSX, I told him when this was all over the market would pop 800 points. I was off by a bit, but in a week short on victories, I'll take it. Some of the business network talking heads were even suggesting that the worldwide financial system was on the verge of collapse if not for the measures taken by the Fed, the Treasury and the SEC. Given the relentless pounding that the financials took to depths never seen before, I am inclined to believe that these opinions weren't hyperbolic. Some of you may think that I have all of the answers; ot ...

Let's make no mistake, the timing of the interventionist actions of the regulators had nothing to do with good trading or investing. I was within pennies of covering a huge number of my positions on Wednesday and, luckily, I didn't get filled, as I witnessed the market reverse itself within minutes. That wasn't skill, that was pure unadulterated luck. Here's my take. The financial disloca- n BUSINESS n tion was certainly unprecedented and shocking, but should this not have been something that could have been planned for. Aren't war room scenarios designed to simulate situations such as the one that brought us to the precipice? The regulators ...

matched and in way over their heads. It was Henry Paulson, a former Goldman Sachs i-banker, who took the reins and laid the groundwork for what everyone hopes will be a soft, albeit expensive, landing. Let's not mince words. The U.S. financial system is rotten to the core. As I touched on last week, years of bad mortgage loans and derivative products sit on balance sheets that no one understands, excessive compensation and easy money have created excesses in the system. Wall Street bonuses alone in recent years have rivaled the GDPs of certain small nations. It was only a matter of time before this bubble burst. The billions of dollars injected will not fix the problem, it will simply allow for the unraveling to occur in a systematic manner. It opened a window for the financial industry to get its act together and to take the time to consolidate in an orderly, unhurried way. In other words, the fire alarm has gone off and the escape plan is to ensure that the building is evacuated with ...

Fashion makeovers all the rage By Julia Gerke The Suburban Judging by the number of reality television shows about fashion makeovers and tips, there is no excuse to be stuck in a 10-year time warp when it comes to clothes. But for many, trying to find trendy pieces that are appropriate, affordable and well made can turn a shopping trip into a major headache. Thankfully, Montrealers don't need to be on national television to get help. Local fashion gurus Caroline Alexander and Jeff Golf claim they can turn fashion victims into style-savvy shoppers. For about $250 a session, the two stylists, who founded the company Ludique, offer fashion advice, personal consultations and shopping sprees without the headaches ? because they do the shopping for you. Simon says she has always loved the outdoors, and eventually started working with wood, cutting, shaping and sawing black walnut, pine and cedar blocks into sculptures. What to do with that education By P.A. Svigny The Suburban For most of us, going to school during the early stages of our lives is a given. But after high school, continuing one's education is far more a matter of choice than anything else. Like many, Concordia University graduate Shirley Ascroft had to make a few decisions over the years and a major one was made when she realized her talent for languages could become the focus of a new career ? teaching English as a second language. ?Concordia was great,? she says. ?They let me use elements from my first degree so it took me only two years to complete a TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) degree.? And the move to a totally foreign country only added to the angst. ?The school didn't even have a syllabus,? she said. ?They expected me to just walk into the classroom and start talking to these students.? Her teacher's training helped her design a customized language instruction program for her first students which she still uses to this day, and her reputation as an English-language specialist grew in both the Czech Republic and throughout the European Union. MARTIN CHAMBERLAND / THE SUBURBAN 60 ? THE SUBURBAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2008 n SPORTS n Teams draw after fast and furious finish Lachine Maroons forward Mathieu Marchal tries to beat Royals goalie Gabriel Ware. By Mitch Gallo The Suburban The new season got off to a less than auspicious start for the West Island Royals and Lachine Maroons, as they settled for a 4-4 tie in peewee BB hockey Saturday morning at the Pointe Claire Arena. The Royals squandered a two-goal lead in the third period, but later came from a onegoal deficit to tie the match with minutes to spare. ?It was alright for a first game but we weren't backchecking and they were more opportunistic than we were,? said Royals head coach Frank Boyer. Dr. Golf Pete Bousquet Now that the Ryder Cup is all said and done, I can't help but think: is it as big as it once was? A year ago, we hosted the Presidents Cup at Royal Montreal, which was a huge deal not only as a fan of golf but also as a fellow Professional. We got a look at most of the best players in the world and the golf was tremendous. I have been following the players whom have made their respectful Ryder Cup respectful and there seems to be missing something. I want to see Mike Weir and Vijay Singh and Stuart Appleby with a mix of Ian Poulter, Luke Donald, and Paul Casey but that will never happen because the entire team has to be European. Over time the rest of the world has developed incredible players, and ...

n NEWS & ANALYSIS n Prime Minister rallies troops in Vaudreuil-Soulanges Harper introduces Montreal candidates By Kevin Woodhouse The Suburban Prime Minister Stephen Harper, seeking a clear mandate in the upcoming federal election, made a significant campaign stop this past Friday when he spoke to supporters and introduced the Conservative candidates for Montreal and region at the le Perrot Community Centre. Prior to Harper taking the podium, Lac St. Louis candidate An ...

The event gives citizens a chance to learn about organic farms in their area as well ?as promoting better eating habits,? said Marla Newhook, executive director of WICA (West Island Citizen Advocacy). The money raised at the event will go towards improving the grounds of the school. THE WEST ISLAND SUBURBAN, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 24, 2008 QUEBEC'S LARGEST ENGLISH WEEKLY NEWSPAPER SINCE 1963 Evil men mean what they say Too many today have forgotten the primordial lessons of survivors. The most frequent responses of Holocaust survivors when they are asked what is the most important lesson they learned from the war is almost always the same. When evil men tell you that they mean to do you harm ? believe them. If they are bluffing, it's a bonus. Too many today are willing to absolve the madmen of Tehran of any seriousness of purpose when they deny the Holocaust while planning a second one. After the comments this week of Iran's ?Supreme Leader? Ayatollah Ali Khameni, they should think again. Iran's apologists have constantly repeated the theme that President Ahmadenijad's ravings aren't really the last word. That they are meant for domestic political consumption. That the real power rests in the Supreme Leader. Well this week Khameni outdid even Ahmadenijad. The I ...
